Emelia Govender

Author

Emelia Govender, a mother of two living in Cape Town. Her love for books and poetry was sparked by her “Didi Aya”(maternal grandmother) who read voraciously.

Emelia has her poem “Me” published in Living While Feminist(Kwela-2020)

Emelia’s debut picture book The Magical Adventures of Cyan: I Believe In Book Fairies, Do You? is a loving tale of determination, kindness and realistic challenges. All children deserve to see themselves in the books they read. She hopes this first book in the series will serve as a conversation starter for families and inspire some soon to be minibookfairies.

Emelia is passionate about diversity in books.

Emelia enjoys thrifting, doing fun castings, writing poetry, reading, being a tourist in her city, spending time with her family and her work as a Book Fairy.

Me

Living while feminist, our bodies, our truths

My poem “Me” features in Living While Feminist which is a collection of essays by fresh and fierce South African voices. Many of our experiences are filtered through our bodies – norms, myths, and cultural standards shape the way that we feel about our bodies and how we see ourselves. Feminism says these rules are bullshit.
This collection takes us from an examination of skin and hair, to an exploration of pleasure, sex, and safety. They explore our bodies and health. They examine the way that institutions can trap us and how we can trap ourselves. It reminds us that feminism is dynamic, open, and ever relevant. A quick read that is filled with thought provoking and powerful poems and essays. http://www.nb.co.za/en/view-book/?id=9780795709418
